Aloe Vera gel or juice in skincare has a host of wonderful benefits from soothing to moisturising skin. The green succulent plant which grows in warm dry climates, has been used for centuries on the skin. In a short review, Amar Surjushe, Resham Vasani, and D G Saple,  wrote that it contains vitamins, enzymes, minerals, sugars, lignin, saponins, salicylic acids, amino acids and much more.

What can Aloe Vera do can do for your skin?

  • It can fight free radicals because it contains antioxidants.
  • It helps heal wounds by increasing collagen synthesis and cross-linking. This helps reduce scar tissue and speeds up wound healing.
  • Aloe Vera gel has been reported to have a protective effect against radiation damage to the skin
  • It has anti-inflammatory properties and can help in easing skin conditions like eczema and psoriasis.
  • Moisturisers skin. It contains humectants that attract water from the air or from deeper in the skin.
  • Has anti- aging benefits. Aloe Vera contains vitamins C and E, which may help prevent the formation of free radicals.
  • It has antifungal and antibacterial compounds which helps acne prone skin. In addition, Aloe Vera  contains salicylic acid, an exfoliator that unclogs pores.
  • Aloe Vera gel also contains compounds that help reduce inflammation. This in turn soothes sunburn.
  • Fades dark spots. There are two compounds in aloe that can fade dark spots and stretch marks: aloesin and aloin. In one study, aloesin was applied four times a day for 15 days and was found to be effective in treating UV-induced and post-acne hyperpigmentation. Another study found aloin destroyed melanin cells  in pigmented cells by blocking tyrosinase, an enzyme responsible for melanin production.
