High-performance night serum for uneven skin tone.
This advanced formula combines 10 targeted ingredients—including Tranexamic Acid and HPR—to visibly fade the appearance of stubborn dark spots and discoloration. Specially formulated for skin of color, it supports a brighter, more even-looking complexion while maintaining the skin’s natural barrier.

I formulated the Melasma Serum to increase cell turnover while simultaneously managing the visible triggers of pigment overproduction.
Most superficial treatments fail because they don’t address the complexities of the skin’s “melanin factory”. This Melasma Serum uses a multi-pathway approach to handle stubborn discoloration.
Clinical Focus
The formula combines ten potent actives, including Tranexamic Acid, Alpha Arbutin, and Hydroxypinacolone Retinoate (HPR). I chose HPR because, according to clinical studies, it is the closest cosmetic alternative to Tretinoin. While Tretinoin is the most researched anti-aging and anti-pigment ingredient in the world, its side effects—severe peeling and barrier destruction—are often too harsh for skin of color. HPR provides the “Gold Standard” results of a prescription retinoid by binding directly to the skin’s receptors, but with a significant reduction in the irritation that triggers pigment.
By pairing this with the brightening power of Kojic Dipalmitate and the antioxidant defense of Ferulic Acid, we provide a dual-action system of renewal and protection. As a skincare formulator and investigative journalist, I chose Kojic Dipalmitate specifically because it is more stable and less irritating than standard Kojic Acid. This ensures the formula is safer and more effective for Black, Indian, and skin of color, where maintaining a “quiet” barrier is the only way to fade deep-seated dark spots and prevent future discoloration.
The Expert Perspective:
Achieving lasting results on South African skin types requires a professional roadmap rather than just a single active. Successful management is about understanding the skin’s biological response to heat and environmental stress.
Expert Note: When pigmentation appears to be darkening, it is frequently a sign of heat sensitivity or barrier stress rather than product failure.
Understand the Science: To prevent common mistakes, we recommend reading the investigative guide, “Why is my Melasma or Dark Spots Getting Darker?” to learn how to adjust a routine based on the skin’s daily feedback.
The Complete Protocol: For resistant cases that require a strategic approach, the Tough Pigmentation and Melasma Combo provides the complete protocol and product combination needed to manage deep-seated pigment.
Primary Benefits of Melasma Serum:
Corrects: Fades the look of deep-seated dark spots and post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation.
Inhibits: Targets the pathways responsible for new surface pigment formation.
Refines: Improves overall texture and clarity through accelerated cell renewal.
Protects: Neutralizes environmental triggers with Tetrahexyldecyl Ascorbate (Vitamin C).
Suitability & Use Case
Target Concerns: Stubborn melasma, Chubaba, post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH), and uneven skin tone.
Skin Types: Formulated specifically for skin of color (Fitzpatrick Types IV-VI), including Black, Indian, and South African skin tones that are prone to irritation-induced pigment.
The Approach: Ideal for those who have found standard brightening products too harsh or ineffective for deep-seated discoloration.
Frequently Asked Questions
How long does it take to see visible results?
We deal in facts, not marketing promises. While surface radiance may improve sooner, deep-seated pigment requires a long-term strategy. You should expect a realistic timeline of 6 months to 1 year of proper management to see significant change in deep discoloration.
Should I use this serum every single day?
Due to our latest research into the inflammatory response of skin of color, we do not recommend using potent actives 7 days a week. Even if your skin feels fine, we advise taking at least one or two "Rest Nights" every week. This allows your barrier to recover and ensures the actives remain effective without causing fatigue.
Does the South African climate affect how I use this?
Absolutely. In the intense heat and UV of the South African sun, your skin is already under stress. Whether you are in the humid heat of KZN or the dry heat of Gauteng, environmental stress can make your barrier more reactive. If your skin feels "angry," stinging, or looks unusually red after a day in the sun, skip the serum that night. Focus on barrier repair until your skin feels "quiet" again.
What happens if my spots look darker at first?
In skin of color, an immediate darkening or "angry" response is often a signal of high inflammation sensitivity. While some believe it must "get worse to get better," we believe in controlled tolerance.
If your skin is highly reactive, do not force a full night's application. Instead, "train" your skin: apply the serum for just one hour every night, then wash it off and follow with a Barrier Repair Cream. This allows your skin to build a tolerance to the potent actives without triggering a full inflammatory response. Once your skin stays "quiet" during this one-hour window, you can gradually increase the time. We don't ignore the darkening; we adjust the protocol to suit your unique biological response.
Is it safe to use during the day?
No. We do not recommend using this product during the day. Because this serum contains Granactive Retinoid and other potent actives, it is formulated strictly for night use when the skin is in its natural repair cycle. In skin of color, daytime exposure to these actives can increase sensitivity and trigger the very inflammation we are trying to avoid. Your daytime focus should be exclusively on protection and barrier support; let the treatment happen at night.
Using for five months. My pigmentation is bad. Getting lighter slowly. Better than other products I used.
Love the way it feels on my skin. My pigmentation looks better, less dark. Using for 3 months now.
Bought this for my mum along with the pigmentation day serum and exfoliant. The pigmentation started to get lighter in a month.

SKIN TYPES
All skin types except extremely dry and overly sensitive skin. However, you should always carry out a patch test before applying a new product.
HOW TO DO A PATCH TEST
Performing a patch test is a crucial step when introducing a new skincare product to your routine, as it can help you to determine whether the product is safe for your skin and whether you may have an adverse reaction to it. Here are the steps for performing a patch test:
- Choose a small area of skin on your inner forearm or behind your ear that is easily accessible and not visible.
- Apply a small amount of the product to the area and spread it evenly.
- Wait for at least 24-48 hours and observe the area for any signs of redness, itching, swelling, or irritation. If you have a reaction, remove the product immediately and rinse the area with cool water.
- If you do not experience any adverse reactions after 24-48 hours, it is likely safe to use the product on your face.
HOW TO USE
- At night, cleanse with a gentle cleanser, such as our Pigmentation or Honey and Oats Cleanser.
- Apply a pea-size amount to your entire face.
This product works really well with our pigmentation night serum and pigmentation exfoliant.
If you're new to retinol, start every other night until your skin gets used to the product. Then increase to every night. While most people are able to use this product daily, use it according to how your skin responds.
You can even use for three nights in a row and on the fourth night do not use, give your skin a break.
