Acne & Oily Skin

Skincare for acne-prone and oily skin — cleansers, exfoliants and treatments that clear breakouts and control oil without stripping the barrier.

Acne & Oily Skin

Acne treatment that clears skin without stripping it

The right acne treatment works on the whole breakout, not only the spot you can see. A pimple starts inside the pore. Too much oil and dead skin block it, acne-causing bacteria grow, and the skin around it becomes inflamed. Our salicylic acid routines treat every stage and protect your skin barrier, so your skin doesn't make even more oil.

Active acne means all four stages are happening at once: too much oil, clogged pores, acne-causing bacteria and inflammation. You need something for each stage, without stripping your skin.

Why it keeps happening

What causes acne? The four stages of a pimple

Acne is triggered by hormones, genetics, stress and pore-clogging products. Whatever the trigger, every pimple goes through the same four stages, so an acne treatment that works needs to cover all four. NHS: causes of acne

1
Too much oil

Your oil glands go into overdrive and make more oil than your skin needs.

2
The pore clogs

Oil and dead skin form a plug, which shows up as a blackhead or whitehead.

3
Bacteria grow

Acne-causing bacteria multiply inside the blocked pore.

4
It gets inflamed

The skin around the pore turns red, swollen and sore. This is the pimple you see.

+
The mark it leaves

On melanin-rich skin, a healed pimple often leaves a dark mark that can last for months.

Watch out for the stripping trap

Harsh acne face washes and products damage your skin barrier. Your skin then makes more oil to make up for it, and you break out again. A ceramide moisturiser protects the barrier while your acne treatment works.

After the breakout

Acne marks and back acne need their own treatment

Clearing the pimples is only part of the job. Dark marks on the face, breakouts on the back and the marks they leave on the body each need a different product.

Once the breakouts have stopped, fade the dark marks they left behind. On melanin-rich skin, these marks often last longer than the pimples did.

Back & body acne

Spray salicylic acid onto your back, chest and shoulders after a shower or workout, and leave it on. If the bumps itch and all look the same, it may be fungal acne, so see a doctor first.

Acne on melanin-rich skin

Acne treatment for skin of colour: the do's and don'ts

On melanin-rich skin the dark mark often lasts longer than the pimple. Anything that inflames or irritates your skin can leave a dark patch behind, so gentle products used every day work better than harsh ones.

Do: keep it simpleUsing more products doesn't clear acne faster. Give one routine several weeks before you judge it.
Do: wear SPF every dayThe sun doesn't cure acne. It makes post-acne marks darker.
Don't: use toothpasteIt may dry a pimple out, but it irritates your skin and can make things worse.
Don't: scrub or over-washScrubbing and washing too often strip your skin's natural oils and cause more breakouts.

Acne treatment FAQs

What is the best acne treatment for oily skin?

Look for salicylic acid, which dissolves oil inside the pore, plus a light gel moisturiser that controls oil without clogging pores. Avoid harsh face washes that strip your skin, because stripped skin makes more oil.

How long does acne treatment take to work?

Most acne ingredients take several weeks of daily use before you see the full result. A common reason acne comes back is stopping the routine as soon as your skin looks better.

Will my skin purge when I start salicylic acid?

Some people break out a little at first while trapped oil and dead skin clear out. Build up slowly: the cleanser three times a week and the exfoliant every second day, so your skin stays calm while it adjusts.

My skin is oily. Do I still need a moisturiser?

Yes. When oily skin is stripped, it often makes more oil. The Day and Night Gels hydrate without clogging pores. If your skin feels tight, add a ceramide cream on top.

Is salicylic acid safe for dark skin?

Yes. These salicylic acid products include soothing ingredients (aloe, panthenol, allantoin) so they don't over-dry, and irritation is what causes dark marks. Patch test first, and wear SPF every day.

How do I treat back acne?

Use a salicylic acid body spray on your back, chest and shoulders after a shower or workout, and leave it on. If the bumps itch and all look the same, see a doctor, as it may be fungal acne.
